Alison dos Santos won the 400m hurdles at the final Diamond League meeting of the season on Saturday, September 5, in Brussels, Belgium, sealing his third circuit title in the event. The Brazilian clocked 46.70 to add the 2026 trophy to his 2022 and 2024 crowns.

American Trevor Bassitt took second in 48.03, with Brazilian Matheus Lima third in 48.18. According to ge, Globo's sports news site, the winning time smashed the Brussels meet record, which had stood since 1986.

The 2026 campaign was total control. InfoMoney reports that Alison, known as "Piu", won all seven Diamond League stops he entered this year: Shanghai, Xiamen, Stockholm, Oslo, Silesia, Zurich and Brussels. The Diamond League is the top annual circuit in track and field.

World record holder since August

Alison, 26, from São Joaquim da Barra in São Paulo state, has held the world record since August 27. At the Zurich meeting in Switzerland he ran 45.80, breaking the 45.94 set by Norway's Karsten Warholm at the Tokyo Olympics, as Folha de S.Paulo reported.

Warholm, his biggest rival this season, skipped the final. According to ge, the Norwegian failed to reach a financial agreement with the organizers. Until Saturday he had been the only three-time champion of the event in the circuit, with trophies in 2019, 2023 and 2025.

For the casual fan, the scale of the performance shows in the finishing gap. The 400m hurdles is a race decided by hundredths, so winning by more than a second means controlling it from gun to tape while keeping a steady rhythm over the ten barriers. Alison's résumé also includes world championship gold in Eugene in 2022, Olympic bronze in Tokyo and Paris, and two Pan American titles.
