The president of Brazil's Supreme Federal Court (STF), Justice Edson Fachin, said on Wednesday (2) that he will review the facts of the Banco Master case and announce "appropriate and necessary" measures in the coming days. According to G1, he spoke at an event on democratic resistance. Fachin did not name Justices Alexandre de Moraes or André Mendonça.
The court's president addressed the limits that come with a seat on Brazil's highest bench. According to Folha de S.Paulo, he said:
"The high authority of the office does not confer privileges, but imposes duties, limits and responsibilities, which must be observed with absolute respect for the Constitution, the laws and the Supreme Federal Court."
What the Federal Police report says
The statement came one day after Mendonça, the justice assigned to the Banco Master case at the STF, lifted the secrecy on a Federal Police report containing messages exchanged by Daniel Vorcaro, the former owner of Banco Master, with a contact saved as Alexandre de Moraes. The material came from a phone seized in Operation Compliance Zero, which investigates an alleged multibillion-real fraud scheme at the bank. According to G1, the report lists eight meetings between Vorcaro and the justice between April 2024 and August 2025.
The documents also cover a contract of about R$ 131 million between Banco Master and the law firm of Viviane Barci de Moraes, the justice's wife, and a second proposal worth R$ 50 million, to be paid with shares in a private jet and a helicopter. According to Folha, part of the messages is attributed directly to Moraes; in other passages, the Federal Police says it only suspects he was the interlocutor. The extraction recovered content sent by Vorcaro, not any replies, and the documents do not show that his requests were met. Folha also reports that Mendonça met Vorcaro in 2025, as first shown by the website ICL, and that part of the Federal Police sees possible excess in the rapporteur's conduct.
Reactions and next steps
The disclosure drew immediate political reactions. Senator and presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro said Moraes "is no longer fit to remain in office". Presidential candidate Renan Santos announced impeachment requests against Moraes and Justice Dias Toffoli, according to BBC News Brasil.
The next move belongs to Fachin. The STF president promised to announce the measures in the coming days, without detailing what will be decided. Mendonça remains the case's rapporteur.
